A5 - Developing job application
1. Tell me about yourself
Hi! I'm Stéphane, I'm 24. I'm a junior 3D Environment Artist currently studying in my final year at Interactive Art & Design (IAD3D) in Montpellier France. I've always been very creative, from imagining worlds with legos ,drawings castles and maps, inventing stories to currently be involved in the game industry.
I also had the great opportunity to spend 3 years studying programming before entering an art school, so that I can be multitasks in these two fields.
2. What is your greatest strength?
Thanks to my background I managed to be independant and self-motivated. I'm a problem solver and by reading a lot of articles I know where to start or how I can achieve various projects using different workflows, softwares and new technologies.
3. Can you describe a situation in your past where you learned from a mistake?
If it's a work related mistake. I can tell that every project I do I make mistakes and learn from them. It allows me to be more efficient each time. Knowing which technique doesn't work and which one is more coherent. I reckon having troubles during some stylized designs. Making too many details at first. I wrote an article for 80.lv about that. Explaining how I managed to work my little handpainted scene. You can read the whole thing here.
If it's not a work related mistake. I remember that I've made a huge mistake by once choosing a school that wasn't intented for me. I almost lost a year but I learnt that, I should have done more research on the school and have higher expectations and this is what led me to my current school.
4. What is the most difficult situation you have ever faced?
It's terribly difficult to answer this question. I got the luck to never have encountered that many really difficult situations in my life. I try to always be positive. However I had some tough times with people at work. Needed to face the difficult reality that I wasn't at the right place. Paintfully feeling that I wasn't a great asset for the team. At least not the best or enough skilled to be right. I ended up switching studies and doing something I'm better at.
5. Is there anything you would like to improve about yourself?
Yes! I'm always improving my social skills with teammates. It's something heavily important I learnt from my teachers during my first years at school. Sometimes you have to deal with telling the truth which can cause a lot of troubles. It's great to know how to tell people what you think in a way they can understand it. At the time I was a bit harsh and clumsy. I guess that by now I did neat progress and I'm still getting better at it.
6. What is the most important thing you are looking for in a job?
In a perfect world I would like to be fully-blown by the job I am looking for. But this is crazy shits you will never had. Like the perfect girlfriend or boyfriend for example. Another lesson I learnt from speakers I met over the time.
I think it's more a mix of two distinct things. In the first hand you have to somehow like what you do. It could not be the exact position you were looking for but you fullfill the job with enthusiam and take the best out of it. On the other hand you need to be in a social environment that makes you happy. Having a good relationship with people working with you, place you lives in etc..
7. What are your career goals?
As you may know by now I'm a creative person who never stops to create. But I'm also passionate in making games. I would be happy to work for various companies all over my 10 first years career. Allowing me the opportunity to improve my experience and discover the mechanisms of the game development world. Especially in the artistic field but not only. I also could be heavily interested to learn few more related jobs. I've always been a fan about creating concept arts for example. This is a position where you can fully drive you creativity into.
Later on I would like to develop my own ideas. Starting from small games to medium sized projects. I've got a lot of ideas which I put on stand by for now. Waiting for the time where I will be ready to push them. And to be honest there is a bunch of my childhood drawing games that I will never forget.
8. What motivates you?
Results. When you managed to turn your first attempt to something decent. When you're excited to share what you have created. When you are proud to say "I worked on that" in front of a bunch of professionals.
When you discover new technologies which allow you to go further. When you never have to do the same thing again and again. When each project is a new challenge.
9. Why would you like to work for us?
Taking example on Guerilla Company.
Horizon is by far the biggest project I want to be part of. Since the launch of the first trailer I knew that this game was meant for me. Everything in it is related to my likings. Story-telling, graphics with post-apo theme mixed with medieval and scifi environements, gameplay and the sense of scale you created. Having the opportunity to contribute to such a masterpiece would be awesome.
10. Why should I hire you?
It took time but I've never been as confident about what I'm good at and what drives me. As I said I previously studied programming which gave me both skillsets and help me to better undertstand how games actually work.
I'm also passionate in everything related to the game development. I always push my knowledge by reading articles and making sure to watch all the new technologies coming out. Keeping me updated every single day.
I tend to always overpass issues by finding tips and tricks. I'm eager for challenges and I love to create environments.
So that this is mainly why I'm sure I could be a great asset for Guerilla and his team.
